General Queries and FAQs!
Mechanical contractors are individuals who are well versed in many fields, including plumbing, piping, heating, air conditioning, and some electrical services. They are highly trained in the individual fields but also have expert knowledge of how systems are properly integrated into a home, office building and industrial structure.
You may have come across mechanical contractors without even realizing it. Many mechanical contractors refer to themselves as offering ‘plumbing and heating services’ without necessarily advertising themselves as mechanical contractors. This is due to plumbing and heating being the more common terms used when potential clients are looking for specific services.
Checking your air filter on a monthly basis is highly recommended. If your disposable filter is dirty, simply toss it and replace it with a new one. Several high-efficiency model filters may go up to three months before needing to be replaced, but a good rule of thumb is to check it often if you are constantly running your system. If your system uses a non-disposable filter, simply turn off your system, remove the filter and spray with a water hose outside until the water runs clear. Reinstall after it has air-dried
No matter what brand or kind of heating and air conditioning system you have, it should be inspected, cleaned and serviced annually; heating in the fall and AC in the spring. This ensures your system will run at peak performance.
A few indicators that your HVAC Systems needs repair and maintenance:
- Strange Sounds: Clicks, pops, squeaks, or grinding. If you are hearing sounds that the unit never made before then it is time to call a professional. Even if the system still provides you with adequate temperature control, the sounds are an indication of an issue that, if left untreated, will likely develop into a more expensive repair.
- Odd Smells: If you find that there is a pungent odor coming from your HVAC system, then there are usually two possibilities. 1) If the smell is burnt, there is a problem with the wiring and some of the insulation has burnt away. 2) If the smell is musty, then it means that there is pooled water in the system that has become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
- Water or Moisture: Look around the system. Is there a lot of condensation or perhaps pools of water? This could be either a problem with the refrigerant which has started to leak or a problem with the drainage system. If you find these issues in your HVAC system, then maintenance or repairs should be the next step.
- Inaccurate Thermostat: Are different rooms different temperatures even though they are controlled by the same thermostat? This could be an issue with the thermostat itself, possibly from the duct work.
